As the SF Giants look to improve their team after missing out on some big-name free agents, there is reporting out there from Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic that the Giants have been aggressive in trade talks.
Apparently, other teams have asked about the availability of staff ace Logan Webb which is a non-starter for the Giants. Below is a snippet of what Baggarly wrote below and the full article can be read in The Athletic here (subscription required). To preface the snippet, Baggarly wrote that opposing front offices have asked for a lot in trade talks with the Giants in an attempt to take advantage of first-year president of baseball operations Buster Posey and first-year general manager Zack Minasian:
SF Giants have reportedly been asked about Logan Webb in trade talks
"And it’s led to a few opening offers — no, the Giants aren’t trading Logan Webb— that have amounted to non-starters and time wasters."
Baggarly also wrote that trade talks have also involved top prospect Bryce Eldridge who is another non-starter for the Giants.
It makes sense that other teams would want these enticing trade chips when discussing trades with the Giants. The Giants do not have a very deep farm system and there are not a ton of players on their big league roster, other than players like Webb or catcher Patrick Bailey, who would get teams excited in trade talks.
That is the delicate dance that Posey and Minasian are tasked with. With many major free agents no longer available and with an ownership group that is clearly not giving Posey a blank check to turn the team around, the trade route makes a lot of sense for the Giants.
However, at a certain point some trades may just not be worth it if you have to give up your top prospect or your best starting pitcher.
That is why it is starting to feel like the Giants may just largely stand pat the rest of this offseason. Maybe they will sign a veteran starter to a one-year deal to add some depth to the rotation and add a player who can play first base, but it seems like the chance for big moves has passed.
Of course, Posey could surprise everyone and sign a massive free agent or swing a blockbuster trade this month. Yet, it is starting to feel like the risk of a splash would outweigh any reward.
This could frustrate fans who feel that the 2025 team may not look that different from the 2024 team, but it may be the most prudent approach. It is just hard to see a world in which trading Webb makes the Giants better unless they got a ridiculous offer from another team. Unless they got an established big league player in return, it would signal to fans that the Giants are rebuilding which is something the team does not do.
Pitchers like Logan Webb do not grow on trees, so it is a good thing that the Giants are not entertaining trading him.
