The SF Giants got some bad news with a recent rumor that suggests first baseman Paul Goldschmidt may reunite with the Arizona Diamondbacks this offseason. The notorious Giants nemesis may be coming back to the NL West for round two.
Giants fans do not need to be reminded of just how much Goldschmidt has tormented the Giants in his career. The 38-year-old has been merciless against San Francisco no matter what team he has played for but at the height of his powers in Arizona he seemed to torch them every time.
SF Giants fans may have to deal with Paul Goldschmidt yet again
In 169 career games against the Giants, Goldschmidt has slashed .301/.403/.551 with 32 home runs and 118 runs batted in. Those are impressive numbers, and his numbers against Giants legend Tim Lincecum are even more remarkable as he went 15-28 with seven homers and 17 runs batted in against The Freak.
Even though the days of Goldschmidt being a perennial All-Star are long gone, he has still been a solid player the last few seasons. In 2025 with the New York Yankees he slashed .274/.328/.403 with 10 home runs and 45 runs batted in. He saw limited opportunities in the playoffs for New York.
There was some thought last offseason that the Giants could make a run at Goldschmidt given they needed a stopgap option at first base and he was set to hit free agency. Instead, he signed with New York and the Giants decided to roll with Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. at the beginning of the season.
That plan evolved as the year went on and Wade struggled which forced the Giants to get Dominic Smith who turned out to be an amazing addition and then they went out and made the blockbuster trade for Rafael Devers.
With Devers and Bryce Eldridge likely to be on the team next season, the Giants are set at first base next year so do not expect any talk connecting them to Goldschmidt this time around.
The D-backs are expected to "kick the tires on a reunion with Goldschmidt" so nothing is set in stone. Still, it would give some Giants fans fever dreams if he came back and donned a D-backs uniform once more after everything he has done to the Giants.
It was much nicer having him far away in the AL East where he could only hurt the Giants once a year, so let's hope if he does sign with a team it is not the Diamondbacks.
