This seems mostly like smoke...

The SF Giants have been linked to lots of sluggers in free agency so far. Scott Boras, arguably the most notorious agent in baseball, reportedly linked the Giants to his client Cody Bellinger at the Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle shared the following on social media: "Scott Boras drops the Giants name amidst an extended pun when asked about Cody Bellinger. Takeaway: huge market for Bellinger and the Giants have at least called on him. IMO he’d be the best possible OF option for SF but lots of other teams feel the same way unsurprisingly."

It is not surprising that the Giants would check in on Bellinger since he is one of the top sluggers on the market and the team has a hole in right field. Bellinger would improve the lineup a lot and would provide even more pop in the middle of the order.

However, the fact that Boras mentioned the Giants in relation to Bellinger should not be read into too much because he is an agent after all and his goal is to create the impression that every team is in on his client to try and entice teams to be more aggressive and raise the bidding war. It seems like a classic Boras move.

The Giants reportedly checked in on left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber and he ended up re-signing with the Philadelphia Phillies so there are going to be a lot of linkages between the Giants and players that may not actually lead to a whole lot.

Still, adding Bellinger would be an exciting move even if he is not a perfect player by any stretch. Last season with the New York Yankees he slashed .272/.334/.480 with 29 homers and 98 runs batted in.

Plus, he brings above-average defense to the table and would be a very nice fit either in right field or he should be able to handle center field if the Giants feel Jung Hoo Lee needs to be moved to a corner spot.

Bellinger will not be cheap, though. ESPN projects that he will earn a six-year, $165 million contract in free agency. We know the Giants are probably hesitant to dole out a contract like that, but maybe president of baseball operations Buster Posey could get ownership on board with a deal like that.

Boras saying the Giants are interested does not mean a whole lot right now although it is noteworthy if the Giants have at least checked in on Bellinger's market.
