Former SF Giants first baseman Mark Canha could be heading back to the East Coast. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the New York Mets have made a non-guaranteed offer to Canha.

Canha spent parts of two seasons with the Mets beginning in 2022, so it would be a return to familiar territory. This is the time of year where teams get aggressive with minor league deals as they prepare for spring training.

Veterans at that market level often take those opportunities, knowing they could be playing elsewhere by the end of camp. In many instances, these players are trying out for all 30 teams.

Canha was originally a Rule 5 pick by the Colorado Rockies in 2014. However, he was shipped to the Oakland A's in a draft day trade in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

It is tough for Rule 5 picks to stick but Canha is one of the few exceptions to that rule. He spent seven seasons with the A's before reaching free agency and joining the Mets on a two-year, $26.5 million deal with a team option for a third season.

The Milwaukee Brewers exercised that $11.5 million club option before the 36-year-old was shipped to the Detroit Tigers last offseason. Canha spent the first half of the 2024 season with Detroit but was shipped to the Giants right before the deadline.

The right-handed bat slashed .288/.376/.329 with zero home runs and four RBI in 85 plate appearances with San Francisco. While he continues to bring a solid at-bat quality to the table, there has been a dip in power.

Perhaps, that is the main reason why Canha may not have a robust market. Some of the other reasons include his age (35) and the fact that he has seen more time at first base in recent seasons. That is a tough role to fill with declining power.

That said, if Canha is able to handle the corner outfield spots, reuniting with the Giants as a fourth outfielder would make sense. It is known that he is a favorite with manager Bob Melvin. However, the Giants are reportedly looking elsewhere to fill that spot on the roster.
