Earlier this year, the New York Mets defeated the SF Giants with ease, winning three out of four games. Since then, they have won one game. What?
New York Mets have been on a bizarre tailspin since facing the SF Giants
Of course, that game came immediately after the conclusion of the Giants' series. They notched a 4-3 walk-off win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They have now lost 11 straight games.
In baseball, it is often when you play a team, not how you play a team. The Mets looked like the superior club against the Giants. They won in a couple of blowouts and rallied for a comeback victory in the final game of the series.
Life was looking good for the Mets. They were 6-4, and it felt like they were on an upward trajectory, even if Juan Soto landed on the injured list with a calf strain. They had enough star power in Francisco Lindor and Bo Bichette to weather that storm. At least, that was the assumption.
Now, the Mets are 7-15 while sitting in last place in the NL East. That is not going to be an acceptable outcome for a market of that size, and it bears mentioning that 22 games is just scratching the surface of the baseball season.
During their losing streak, they have only scored 17 runs. This includes being shutout three times, and scoring fewer than three runs in nine of those games.
While Soto being out is definitely a blow to the lineup, there is too much talent on that roster to struggle as badly as they have. Bichette, along with Marcus Semien and Jorge Polanco, have not gotten it going at the plate. Lindor has struggled right out of the gates as well. Francisco Alvarez and Luis Robert Jr. have been some of the few bright spots this season.
On the pitching side, Freddy Peralta has pitched to a 4.05 ERA in five starts, whereas Devin Williams has been roughed up in seven appearances. Both of them joined the Mets in the offseason. Sean Manaea, who is in the middle of a three-year deal, has been relegated to the bullpen and his fastball velocity is way down.
This all started with a convincing series victory over the Giants. Luckily, the baseball season is a long one, and things can turn around quickly. It is just bizarre how quickly things can go south.
