In addition to being a star player on the field, new SF Giants shortstop Willy Adames is known as a leader in the clubhouse. He recently told Mark DeRosa of The MLB Network that the club could surprise some people in 2025.
New SF Giants star makes a bold statement about the 2025 team
DeRosa asked Adames to give his first impressions of Giants camp and the seven-year veteran highlighted the impact of having Buster Posey in charge. He went on to credit the coaching staff, believing that the team will make some noise.
"I feel like the coaching staff has been unbelievable," Adames told DeRosa. "They've been amazing. They've been great. I'm just excited to be out there and competing. I think we're in a better spot than people think."
Adames mentioned how much he will enjoy having Matt Chapman on the left side of the infield. He also talked about his pregame routine, alternating between cereals such as Cap'n Crunch and Frosted Flakes. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Spring training is the ultimate time for vibes. Every team has a chance at the start of the year and the optimism during the regular season is rarely as high as it is in camp.
There is nothing unusual with what Adames said. In fact, you can probably find players on just every other team conveying the same confidence.
That said, Adames has been to the playoffs a lot in his career. He has reached the postseason five times in seven years in the majors. He expects to be there. This includes appearing in the World Series with the Tampa Bay Rays against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. The Brewers dropped that series in six games. Since then, he has been in the playoffs in three of the last four years with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The veteran hitter knows what a playoff team looks like, so there is a little more weight in what he says. More than anything, the Giants hope that Adames' time with the club helps fix the culture problem that has been plaguing the organization for the past few years. Winning goes a long way in doing that, and the Giants hope Adames' tenure with the club is marked by building a winning culture.
