The SF Giants have been connected to Houston Astros slugger Kyle Tucker. Pulling off a trade for the left-handed power bat would not be easy, but it could transform the Giants' lineup. Let's take a look at what a potential trade could look like.
The New York Post's Joel Sherman has reported that the Giants are one of several teams who are interested in trading for Tucker. Other teams include the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago Cubs.
Tucker has been an All-Star in three consecutive seasons. In 2024 he slashed .289/.408/.585 with 23 home runs and 49 RBI in just 78 games before a shin injury derailed his year. In 2023 he hit 29 homers and also stole 30 bases.
Creating an SF Giants mock trade with the Houston Astros for Kyle Tucker
He would clearly be an upgrade over Mike Yastrzemski in right field. While Yastrzemski is a solid player, he simply does not possess the same combination of power, speed, and an ability to hit for average the way Tucker does. Tucker is also a Gold Glove winner so he would provide stellar defense as well.
Of course, landing a player of Tucker's caliber would not be easy, but it may very well be worth it for the Giants.
CBS Sports identified first base and third base as the two biggest needs for the Astros this offseason. With that in mind, let's craft a mock trade that could potentially bring Tucker to the Giants.
San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros MOCK TRADE PROPOSAL: San Francisco receives OF Kyle Tucker in exchange for 1B LaMonte Wade Jr., IF Casey Schmitt, and SP Carson Whisenhunt
Wade is someone who has been talked about as a potential trade candidate for the Giants. He would give the Astros a solid first baseman who gets on base a lot. Perhaps his power numbers will improve a bit since Minute Maid Park is a bit more forgiving to left-handed hitters than Oracle Park is.
Casey Schmitt would be a player with some solid upside at third base for the Astros. They may not want him to be their everyday starter, but we know he is defensively strong enough to handle the position, the main question is if he can hit well enough to justify keeping in the lineup. He finished 2024 strong for the Giants, and with Matt Chapman at third base, Willy Adames at shortstop, and Tyler Fitzgerald at second base, there is not much room left for Schmitt on the Giants.
Carson Whisenhunt is the third best prospect in the Giants' organization according to MLB.com. The lefty would be a potential future piece of the rotation for Houston who could even debut in 2025 if he looks strong in the minor leagues.
Tucker will be a free agent after the 2025 season so the Giants would not have to completely sell the farm given the fact that he could just be a rental. This mock trade package would fill some needs for the Astros while also giving them a nice cherry on top with a young prospect.
It will not be easy for the Giants to get Tucker, but a trade like this could get the job done.
