MLB Pipeline highlighted one prospect from each team’s draft class who had the best pro debut. For the SF Giants, there were no surprises, as 17th-round pick Tanner Mally got the nod.
The Giants went heavy on pitching early in this year’s class. Jackson Flora, Carson Bolemon, and Kaden Waechter led the way with the club’s first three picks.
Flora made his official pro debut this summer. He appeared in a handful of games, including getting one start at Double-A to finish the season.
Teams are generally conservative with a pitcher’s workload in their draft year, and that remained true for Bolemon and Waechter, both of whom were selected as prep arms. Both pitchers made their unofficial pro debut in the Bridge League, and Eric Logenhagen Fangraphs shared his observations.
Late 2026 SF Giants draft pick quickly proved to be above Low-A competition
The Giants continued to bolster the pitching side of the farm system by drafting Eric Nachtsheim and Beau Bryans in the sixth and seventh round, respectively. Later in the draft, they added Tanner Mally out of Western Michigan University. He agreed to a $150,000 signing bonus to begin his pro career.
Mally had some of the best contact skills of any player in the draft. That is a trait that they targeted heavily in the 2025 draft, and they continued that in 2026. The Giants hope to improve contact skills from the ground up. Mally, Gavin Kilen, Trevor Cohen, and Isaiah Barkett are just a few of the recent selections to that point.
The Giants assigned Mally to Low-A to make his official pro debut. In fact, he was the first player from the Giants’ 2026 draft class to appear in a game.
Mally quickly proved to be above the Low-A competition. He posted a 1.017 OPS with six extra-base hits, 18 RBI, and 25 runs in 107 plate appearances with the San Jose Giants. This includes 20 walks and 16 strikeouts, along with eight steals in nine attempts.
Interestingly, the 22-year-old prospect split time between the outfield and second base in college. He continued that trend as a pro. While most of his time on defense was in the outfield, he made a couple of appearances at second base as well for San Jose.
