MLB Pipeline updated its top-30 prospect lists for each organization earlier this week. It then shifted gears to farm system rankings, with the SF Giants getting a surprisingly low placement at No. 19.

MLB Pipeline gives SF Giants surprisingly low placement in latest farm system rankings

Near the end of last season, MLB Pipeline did an update to its farm system rankings. In that ranking, the Giants made a sizable jump to No. 18 and was viewed as the most improved system.

That view is not unique to MLB Pipeline. Baseball America recently discussed the night-and-day improvement compared to last season.

This viewpoint was supported with quite a few younger pitching prospects popping up last summer, including Argenis Cayama, Keyner Martinez, and Luis De La Torre. This occurred in conjunction with Bryce Eldridge’s continued ascent, along with Jhonny Level and Josuar Gonzalez excelling at the lower levels.

Additionally, the Giants signed top international prospect Luis Hernández in January. Luck was also on their side, as they landed the No. 4 pick in the 2026 draft.

There is reason to believe that the farm system might take another step forward in 2026. However, the MLB Pipeline views the current iteration as in the middle of the pack.

In their updated top-100 prospect list, only Bryce Eldridge and Josuar Gonzalez made the cut at No. 25 and No. 44, respectively. They also mentioned Level, Gavin Kilen, Dakota Jordan, Jacob Bresnahan, and Bo Davidson as candidates to be added to this list in the near future.

There is a good chance that MLB Pipeline does not yet factor Hernández into its ranking. He gets a brief shoutout in the summary of the system, but these preseason farm system rankings and top-100 lists typically do not factor in players who were just signed internationally.

The Giants’ farm system also leans on the younger side, so there is a bit more projection needed in evaluating those prospects. That is tough to do, and it feels like MLB Pipeline puts more weight into performance than tools. That is just a guess.

Does it feel a bit low? If you watch these players on a daily basis, it is easy to see that they have more talent than they are given credit for. That said, ESPN did its farm system rankings in January, and they also had the Giants at No. 19.
