MLB insider was dead wrong about what SF Giants were able to get for Luis Arraez

Going into the 2026 trade deadline, MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN warned that the SF Giants probably wouldn’t get a ton in return for their two most obvious trade chips Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray. In fact, he was confident that neither would bring back a top-100 prospect in return but he was wrong on that front at least in the eyes of one publication.

San Francisco got prospect Ramon Marquez from the Philadelphia Phillies in the Luis Arraez trade and FanGraphs ranks him as the No. 67 overall prospect in baseball. Sure, it’s not MLB Pipeline or Baseball America but it’s still a trusted outlet that is high on the 20-year-old pitcher.

To be fair to Passan, it was fair to wonder how big a return Arraez would bring back since he’s just a rental and will be a free agent after the season. He definitely felt the Giants would get a solid prospect but with the way some Phillies fans reacted to the trade it’s clear they didn’t love having to give him up.

Marquez has a very impressive 1.68 ERA on the year in the minors. He has 93 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched and MLB Pipeline already has him ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in San Francisco’s farm system.

He may not be considered top-100 in every list right now, but it would not be shocking if he does start to pop up on those lists in a year or two if he keeps on putting up numbers like that as he progresses through the minors.

Giants got a lot of intriguing talent at trade deadline

In all, the Giants did what they had to do at the deadline. It hurts to sell players like Arraez, Ray, and Heliot Ramos who all had really great moments in a Giants uniform but there really wasn’t a choice after how this season has gone.

They got back a lot of interesting prospects in these deals and while it’s fun to see who is in the top-100 or where everyone ranks all that stuff is just noise at the end of the day. We’ve seen top-100 guys bust and we’ve seen other prospects come out of nowhere and become great big league players so this will more have to do with how well the Giants develop these guys than anything else.

The farm system continues to get strong and while that’s small consolation after such a bad year at the big league level at least there is the hope that brighter days will be on the horizon.
