MLB insider says this former general manager 'makes sense' for SF Giants
He has plenty of experience as a GM.
The SF Giants are looking for a general manager after they hired Buster Posey as their president of baseball operations. One MLB insider floated the name Thad Levine, who recently departed the GM role with the Minnesota Twins.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote recently, "The Giants are looking for a GM. One name that makes sense is Thad Levine, the well-regarded exec who departed the Twins."
Thad Levine could be a good fit as SF Giants general manager
Levine has spent time working for several organizations over the past 25 years. He began with the Los Angeles Dodgers in business development and worked for the Colorado Rockies and in the front office of the Texas Rangers as an assistant GM.
He was hired as the general manager of the Minnesota Twins back in 2016. 5 of the 8 years he was with the Twins resulted in winning seasons and 4 of those seasons saw the Twins make the postseason although they did not advance beyond the divisional round any of those years.
Levine served as the right-hand man to Derek Falvey, the president of baseball operations for the Twins. This shows that Levine is comfortable in that role of being a secondary figure to the person calling the shots. That is the same situation he would come into if the Giants were to hire him as their general manager.
It seemed to be a mutual parting of ways with Falvey praising the work that Levine had done while Levine's contract was expiring so it made sense for both sides to move on with Falvey being more of the final decision-maker in their front office.
Levine spoke about what now awaits him in general manager free agency: "I’ve heard told tales from agents and players from days of yore that there’s this mystical panacea called free agency. I’m blessed that it took me 25 years to get there. I really count myself blessed and here I am so I’m a little bit intrigued at the notion of what free agency may have in store for me."
With his options fairly wide open, the opening with the Giants figures to be a pretty appetizing one. He would get to come to a premier organization that has a lot of money and an inexperienced but beloved president of baseball operations in Posey. It seems like the perfect opportunity for a guy like Levine to really put his stamp on an organization as Buster learns the ropes and fully starts to grasp whatever his role will be on a day-to-day basis.
Other names have already been floated but watch out for Levine as a potential candidate to become the next general manager of the Giants.
