MLB insider has hard time seeing the SF Giants moving their three largest contracts at trade deadline

The SF Giants will look to move Robbie Ray and Luis Arráez at the trade deadline, but could they move any of their three largest contracts? Robert Murray of FanSided does not believe that Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, or Willy Adames will be changing uniforms anytime soon.

That is not a terribly surprising nugget. Murray does not envision teams giving the Giants what they want for Chapman or Adames.

Neither player would command much in terms of prospect capital, but what the Giants might want is relief. Adames is in the second year or a seven-year, $182 million pact and Chapman is in the second year of a six-year, $151 million deal. Both contracts include a full no-trade clause, so the player would need to approve any prospective deal.

The SF Giants want relief more than prospect capital in return

Adames has rebounded after a brutal April, but he has just a .715 OPS with nine home runs and 24 RBI. The defensive metrics grade him as one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball.

The veteran infielder is known for being a slow starter, and that extends to the bases and in the field. At some point soon, the Giants may need to consider a shift over to second base.

On the other hand, Chapman continues to rank as an above-average defender, even while the errors continue to pile up. However, there has been a complete collapse in his power numbers.

The right-handed bat has just two home runs in 256 plate appearances. His bat speed is still strong, so the foundation is there to rebound from a rough start.

There seems to be a theme here. Rafael Devers also got off to a slow start but rebounded in May, putting up a .949 OPS in 118 plate appearances. Overall, he still has a .705 OPS in 260 plate appearances in 2026.

Robert Murray speculates that Devers would have trade interest, but the remainder of his 10-year, $315.5 million pact is weighing down his value.

These three players have contributed to the club’s abysmal 24-38 start. Without the star players performing, the Giants have little to leverage to turn this season around.

Perhaps, even more concerning than performance is that Adames, Chapman, and Devers are still in the early stages of their respective deals. If they do not turn it around, these deals could weigh down the Giants for years.

They might be motivated to move any of the three, but they are unlikely to find takers. More than likely, they will move players on expiring deals at the trade deadline. That includes Robbie Ray and Luis Arráez.
