The SF Giants have officially hired Tony Vitello as the team's next manager. Now, the hard work will begin as he tries to assemble a coaching staff which Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow believes will be key for the first-time MLB manager.

Appearing on KNBR, Krukow was asked about what he thinks will be most important for Vitello as he adjusts to his new role. Krukow's response makes a lot of sense:

“He's going to have to delegate. Because there's no way that a guy who's never faced a professional season of games, I mean, the most games he's ever had on his schedule has been 60. When you start talking about 162, it's a different animal. And the only way you can get through that is to delegate.”

Krukow says delegating will be biggest key for new SF Giants manager Tony Vitello

Even before Vitello was hired, Krukow warned of some of the issues that could be in play for a manager with no MLB experience. Krukow has been very complimentary of Vitello's energy, confidence, and charisma but he has also been realistic about the fact that there will be a learning curve for him and there is risk involved in hiring him.

Vitello is going to have to lean heavily on whoever he surrounds himself with initially. He is going to need some time to fully get up to speed and get familiar with who his players are and what strengths and weaknesses they bring to the table. Having people around him on his coaching staff, whoever they end up being, will be crucial to make this transition as painless as possible for Vitello as he comes straight from the college ranks.

It will be interesting to see what the biggest adjustments will be for Vitello as he gets acclimated to his new job. Can he sustain his patented energy over the course of a full season? Will he get immediate buy-in from veteran players who are used to things being done a certain way?

We do not know the answers to these questions, but the fact that president of baseball operations Buster Posey has vouched for Vitello will buy him some credibility right off the bat.

Hopefully we will see Vitello's coaching staff come together in the coming weeks so we can get a fuller picture of what the team around him will look like and who will best be able to serve him as he tries to delegate as Krukow advises.
