While McCovey Cove Dave has become a bit of a controversial figure amongst SF Giants fans over the years, he did the right thing on Saturday night. Bryce Eldridge hit his first career big league home run at Oracle Park and the ball bounced into McCovey Cove. Dave recovered it and gave it to Eldridge after the game.
It was a nice moment for Eldridge who got to take a picture on the field with the ball after the game alongside his family.

McCovey Cove Dave has a checkered past when it comes to giving back home run balls
While McCovey Cove Dave, otherwise known as Dave Edlund, has become something of a mini-celebrity amongst Giants fans over the years due to the fact that he is always out in the cold waters of the Cove and has probably retrieved more home run balls out there than anyone else, he actually got into some hot water a few years ago for refusing to give Heliot Ramos his home run ball when Ramos became the first right-handed hitter to record a Splash Hit at Oracle Park.
Not only did he refuse to give it back, but he said that Ramos had not "earned" it which rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Even back then he said that he would give Eldridge, a budding prospect at the time, his first Splash Hit or home run ball back so it's a bit odd why he picks and chooses who to give balls back to. He even refused to give an Atlanta Braves player a grand slam ball they hit into the Cove unless he got free parking from the Giants.
The decision to keep Ramos' ball was a really weird and selfish move by Edlund and he was roundly criticized for it. Fans certainly have not forgotten as many on social media were hoping that he would not get Eldridge's ball last night out of fear that he'd keep it to himself again. At least he did the right thing this time, but many fans will never forgive him for what he did to Ramos.
As for Eldridge, the hope is that he will record many Splash Hits in his career. He certainly has the raw power to do it as evidenced by Saturday night and with how badly things are going for the Giants this year, Eldridge may be one of the few reasons to be excited about this team going forward. Let's just hope Dave doesn't get them all otherwise he might get greedy and start charging Eldridge for them.
