Marlins have given SF Giants opportunity they need to offload Willy Adames to Red Sox

This could be their only hope.

The SF Giants have reportedly been open to trading their big contracts but as of yet reporting suggests there haven’t been many takers. The Miami Marlins might just help them out though if their asking price for Otto Lopez is prohibitively high.

The Boston Red Sox are in the market for a shortstop so maybe the Giants could be in a good position if Boston gets desperate and is unable to get its first choice. Boston has reportedly balked at Miami’s asking price for Lopez.

Willy Adames would be an upgrade at short even though he obviously comes with that massive contract he will be owed until 2031. That could scare a lot of teams off but the Red Sox have money and could conceivably absorb that deal.

Lopez is obviously the better player though. The Giants have to feel silly for getting rid of him back in 2024 because now he has one of the highest batting averages in MLB and is a hot commodity. He’s hitting .322/.355/.481 with nine home runs, 51 runs batted in, and 22 stolen bases.

Not only that but he’s 27 so he’s younger than Adames and is under team control until  after the 2029 season. The Red Sox are going to target guys like Lopez or Zach Neto, but teams often like to hold onto those controllable players.

This will all depend on how desperate the Red Sox are. If they really really feel like they need a shortstop then maybe they will turn to Adames and the Giants as a last resort. They'd been on fire as of late so they may very well be in a buying mood.

Giants may have to get rid of Willy Adames sooner rather than later

San Francisco would have to eat money in the deal and the prospect haul probably wouldn’t be that great. Maybe they could at least get someone like pitcher Juan Valera or shortstop Dorian Soto so they could have a high-upside prospect.

This also depends on how desperate the Giants are to get rid of Adames. His deal has already aged really poorly and there’s a world in which this could be the last trade deadline he still has any value. It should also be noted Adames has a no-trade clause in his contract so he has a say in the matter too.

Maybe a deal will ultimately just be too hard to pull off but if the Red Sox are scared at what a package could look like for Lopez then maybe absorbing a big contract is their only avenue to getting an upgrade at short.
