Luis Arraez’s Phillies debut couldn't have gone any better after SF Giants trade

The SF Giants traded away six players ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Arguably the one it hurt most to see go was second baseman Luis Arraez who had a great season for San Francisco and was an All-Star.

He made his Philadelphia Phillies debut on Tuesday night and he could not have gotten off to a better start as he had an RBI single in his first at-bat. Arraez received a huge round of applause before his at-bat, a rare show of class from Phillies fans, and again received cheers after he drove in Trea Turner.

Then, in Arraez’s second at-bat he hit a double to right field and drove in yet another run. That’s a pretty good way to ingratiate yourself with a notoriously brutal fanbase.

As of this writing, Arraez has gone 2-for-4 on the night and the Phillies lead the Washington Nationals 5-0 in the seventh inning.

It’s not hard to imagine Arraez becoming very popular in Philadelphia. He seems to be a pretty popular guy wherever he goes with his antics in the batter’s box and fun personality. 

Philadelphia is currently 7.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East but they currently have a hold on the third NL Wild Card spot. Arraez is a perfect bat for a playoff team given the way he seemingly always puts the ball in play and can come up with huge hits in the clutch.

Maybe this will be a trade where both the Giants and Phillies win

He’s already won three batting titles and there is a decent chance that he will win a fourth since he remains in the National League. He seems destined to get a nice deal in the offseason from a team looking to upgrade at second base.

The Phillies were willing to move players around to accommodate Arraez. Bryce Harper is moving back to the outfield and their infield was rearranged a bit so they feel strongly enough about what Arraez will be able to provide on offense to shake things up defensively.

It was a great debut for Arraez and while the Giants should definitely feel good about the trade because they got two promising young pitchers for a guy who is going to be a free agent after the season, it will still hurt a bit to see him do good things for another team the rest of the year. Let's just hope he can bring the goods against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.
