While the SF Giants dropped the second game of the series against the New York Yankees on Saturday, there was a consolation prize. The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered an embarrassing defeat, losing to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 16-0.
Longtime SF Giants rivals suffer embarrassing loss at home not seen in over a century
It was not just that they lost so badly. Or they got shut out at home with a lineup featuring Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Or that they had to use a position player, Miguel Rojas, to close out the game.
No, it was a historically embarrassing loss. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that it was the Dodgers' worst shutout loss since 1965. Not only that, it was their worst loss at home in franchise history, surpassing a 15-0 shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1898.
Teams have bad losses every year, but this one is uniquely different. I mean, these are the reigning World Series champions. They had one of their prized offseason additions in Roki Sasaki start the game. The 23-year-old pitcher did not do bad, allowing one earned run across five frames before giving way to the bullpen.
The wheels fell off quickly after that. Ben Casparius and Luis GarcĂa combined to give up 10 earned runs in just two innings of work. Miguel Rojas finished the game, allowing five earned runs across two innings.
Rojas imitated some of the pitchers on the Dodgers' staff, including Sasaki, Clayton Kershaw, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He lobbed in pitches that you normally see at a beer league softball game. I know this is all good and fun because it is the Dodgers, and they are a very talented team, but can we stop with this? It is insulting to the integrity of the game to have players come in and float in these "fastballs" over the plate. It is also insulting to the fans who paid to watch the game. Just forfeit the game and give everyone of age a free beer at that point.
Anyways, that is my "old man yells at cloud" rant of the day. An uber-talented team that has All-Stars and future Hall of Famers on it suffered a brutal loss. Also, the Cubs might be a pretty good team this year.
