Two-time Gold Glove winner Nick Ahmed spent 10 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Over the past year, he appeared with a handful of teams, including the SF Giants. On Thursday, he announced his retirement after 12 MLB seasons.
Longtime infielder, who had a brief stint with SF Giants in 2024, announces retirement
Ahmed's tenure with Arizona came to an unceremonious conclusion at the end of the 2023 season. He was designated for assignment in September of that year and was released a couple of days later.
Ahmed underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in June of 2022. He was always seen as a glove-first infielder, but he struggled to muster anything on offense following the procedure. In his final year with the Diamondbacks, he .560 OPS with two home runs and 17 RBI in 210 plate appearances.
The longtime infielder did not quite have as strong of an arm following the surgery, too. That said, he still had good range with a quick release.
The Giants signed Ahmed to a minor league deal right before spring training started last year. The move signaled the end of Brandon Crawford's tenure with the club.
San Francisco had planned for Marco Luciano to get a long look at shortstop, but with the addition of Ahmed, those plans changed. Ahmed put together a solid spring, and made the Opening Day roster. He provided steady defense at shortstop, but not much with the bat. Overall, he recorded a .581 OPS with one home run and 15 RBI in 172 plate appearances with San Francisco.
The Giants released Ahmed at the beginning of July. He latched on with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 17 games later in the season. The right-handed bat hit one home run with the Dodgers. Incredibly, it was a go-ahead solo home run against the Giants with Tyler Rogers on the mound. That proved to be the final home run of his career, and it came against a pitcher with one of the lowest home-run rates since 2020.
Ahmed finished the season with a brief stint in San Diego. At this point, he had four NL West teams checked off, with only the Colorado Rockies remaining. However, he signed with the Texas Rangers this season, where he appeared in five games before calling it a career. We at Around the Foghorn would like to wish Ahmed the best in his future endeavors.
