Logan Webb's comparison for Cesar Perdomo would be a dream for SF Giants

The SF Giants have had to dig deep with their pitching depth this season. They’ve lost so many pitchers either to injury or via trade that they are having to lean on guys many fans had never heard of at the start of the season.

One of them is left-handed pitcher Cesar Perdomo who began the season in Double-A with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He had a 4.43 ERA in 120 innings pitched in the minors this season between Double-A and Triple-A and was promoted to give the Giants some innings down the stretch as they close out this brutal season.

He’s done a fine job thus far with a 3.72 ERA in four outings and 19 and 1/3 innings pitched entering Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins in which Perdomo will be the starter. Perdomo has struck out 12 batters and walked seven. While it’s unlikely he will end up establishing himself as a rotation fixture, Logan Webb had some high praise for him.

In a recent article by Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, he notes that Webb said Perdomo reminds him a bit of Ranger Suarez, an All-Star pitcher for the Boston Red Sox who is having a really good season. It’s not a bad comparison as both are from Venezuela and they both are fairly compact pitchers with similar motions. 

Neither guy is going to blow hitters away with velocity, but Suarez gets outs with a six-pitch mix that he uses to keep hitters guessing. Perdomo currently only has three pitches, but if he can keep learning more pitches and add them to his repertoire then there’s a good chance he will only become more and more effective.

Giants have several young arms who could play a role going forward

I wrote recently about how Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson seems to be following a similar path to former Giant Yusmeiro Petit as a long reliever and spot starter, but the same thing can be said about Perdomo. He too could provide some length out of the bullpen and can start a game if needed.

Those sorts of arms are valuable and they’ll be especially valuable for the Giants next season since guys like Perdomo, Wilkinson, Yunior Marte, and Anthony Molina will be the next line of defense if any of San Francisco’s primary five starters goes down with an injury.

Webb likening him to Suarez is encouraging though and even if Perdomo is never an All-Star, he’s shown promise and could be a guy the Giants lean upon going forward.
