In Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies, Logan Webb struck out outfielder Zac Veen. It seemed like just another one for the SF Giants All-Star to add to his ledger, but it also marked his 1,100th career strikeout rate.
Webb started to receive a big ovation, which caught him by surprise. That was until he looked at the scoreboard and realized that he had reached a career milestone. Webb appreciated the fan support, but in jest, referred to it as an insignificant accomplishment.
There is no special meaning necessarily for a pitcher recording his 1,100th strikeout. Teams do not often stop the game to recognize the moment, but it is a sign of a pitcher who has been around for a bit while being quite effective. He only needs about 2,400 more strikeouts before he catches up to Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer!
This scenario might sound oddly familiar. In 2021, veteran infielder Jean Segura recorded his 200th double against the Giants. He then took off his helmet and acknowledged the Philadelphia Phillies crowd for the accomplishment. The moment was captured on the scoreboard.
SF Giants starter Logan Webb is still competing despite a lost season for the SF Giants
It was a bit of a bizarre, in-game ceremony. Webb's accomplishment was not necessarily much different, but it added levity to what has become a lost season for the Giants.
To Webb's credit, he is still competing. He allowed one earned run with seven strikeouts and zero walks across six innings in a 7-1 victory over the Rockies. He was removed after only 80 pitches, but that was a precaution. During the game, Webb took a comebacker off his shoulder, which later caused some discomfort, but it is not considered serious.
In 22 starts this season, Webb has a 3.50 ERA, 3.16 FIP, 1.06 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, and a 3.44 SO/W rate. His 3.1 fWAR marks the sixth straight year that he has been worth at least three wins above replacement according to Fangraphs.
The Giants had some other highlights in Saturday's game. Drew Gilbert reached base four times. This included hitting his sixth home run of the year. Jung Hoo Lee notched two hits and a walk in three at-bats. Lastly, Turner Hill tallied a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI.
