SF Giants FanFest visited Sacramento over the weekend and president of baseball operations Buster Posey made a surprise appearance. Starting pitcher Logan Webb could not help himself and had a little fun at the expense of his old teammate.
In an Instagram video, Webb starts the video before saying, "Hey, can you guys watch my boss for a second?" Webb smirks and then hands the phone to Buster who awkwardly looks at the camera for a second or two before shifting it away from him. The video can be watched here.
SF Giants ace Logan Webb posts hilarious video of Buster Posey
The whole video has the vibe of a grandkid pulling a prank on his grandpa which is even more hilarious considering Webb is 28 years old and is just nine years younger than Buster. The two were teammates less than four years ago, leading the Giants to memorable playoff victories against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It's great to see that Webb is able to have fun with Buster in this way. The fact that he and other veterans on the team like Mike Yastrzemski, Wilmer Flores, and LaMonte Wade Jr. have that added familiarity with Buster because they were all teammates makes for a very unique dynamic between them. It is sort of like if the senior you were friends with as a freshman in high school graduated and became the principal a few years later.
The fact that Posey was a player so recently has already made for a different dynamic with the players from how it was under Posey's predecessor, Farhan Zaidi. Younger players like Tyler Fitzgerald have spoken about how transparent Posey has been when explaining decisions.
Beyond awkwardly staring into Logan Webb's phone, Posey did actually say things of substance at FanFest. In a video captured by San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shayna Rubin posted on X that can be viewed here, Posey said, "Why are we doing this if it's not about winning a championship?"
Some fans may scoff at that statement when comparing San Francisco's roster to the rest of the NL West, but it seems like 2025 could be more of a foundation-laying season for the Giants. There is certainly going to be a learning curve for Posey as a first-year president of baseball operations, but he has more leash afforded to him than Farhan Zaidi ever would have.
We also see from Webb's silly video that players should be able to connect with him much better than an executive without playing experience would be able to. That may not mean the Giants will win the World Series this season, but resetting the culture in 2025 could lead to better things down the road.
