The SF Giants had two representatives make the All-Star team. Logan Webb and Luis Arráez earned their third selection and fourth selection, respectively.
Overall record tends to influence the number of representatives that a team has in the All-Star Game. At 37-51, that usually means that a team will only be sending one representative, but the Giants had several deserving candidates.
Casey Schmitt looks like a potential snub. The right-handed bat is hitting .283/.307/.491 (118 wRC+) with 16 home runs, 44 RBI, and 38 runs in 335 plate appearances. Plus, he has played a handful of positions, including learning the outfield on the fly.
Schmitt has returned to third base, which is his best position, but he is blocked by Matt Chapman. The young Giants infielder made a pair of good plays at the hot corner over the weekend, highlighting his defensive acumen. He could still make the All-Star team as an alternate.
On the other hand, Luis Arráez and Logan Webb were deserving candidates. Arráez is slashing .330/.364/.467 (127 wRC+) with four home runs, 33 RBI, and 45 runs in 366 plate appearances. This includes a 5.2 percent walk rate, 4.1 percent strikeout rate, and .136 ISO.
A pair of SF Giants players earn NL All-Star Game nod
The veteran infielder had not graded out as a good defensive infielder before this season, but put in a lot of work with Ron Washington and has seen that work pay off. He is on a one-year deal, and the Giants will likely look to trade him before the trade deadline.
Webb got off to a slow start due in large part to an injury. However, he rebounded nicely in June and even took home NL Pitcher of the Month honors for the first time in his career. During that month, he pitched to a 0.71 ERA while allowing three earned runs across 38 innings of work.
Overall, the Giants ace has posted a 3.66 ERA, 3.31 FIP, 1.16 WHIP, 7.5 K/9, and a 3.25 SO/W rate across 93.1 innings. This includes a healthy 50.9 percent ground ball rate.
Webb has a streak going of completing at least 200 innings over the past three seasons. He has a chance to reach that again this year, but will need to assume a heavy workload in the second half of the year to do so.
