The SF Giants made a second wave of roster cuts on Friday. Lefty reliever Juan Sánchez, along with Wilkin Ramos, were reassigned to minor league camp, per Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle.
Left-handed reliever among second wave of roster cuts in SF Giants camp
The Giants did not make any roster cuts until this week. Will Bednar and Bo Davidson headlined the first wave of players reassigned to minor league camp earlier this week. With 10 days to go before Opening Day, they will need to make quite a few more cuts to trim the roster.
Sánchez and Ramos were reassigned to minor league camp since they received non-roster invites. If they had been on the 40-man roster, then they would have been optioned. The end result is the same, even if the terminology is slightly different.
The Giants already have a lot of southpaw relievers on the depth chart. Erik Miller, Matt Gage, and Sam Hentges are some of the primary options on the 40-man roster. Of course, Hentges has not yet pitched in a Cactus League game and will likely not be ready for Opening Day.
The Giants also brought back another left-handed pitcher in Joey Lucchesi earlier this week. Carson Whisenhunt could move into a bullpen role as well if he is not able to stick as a starter.
While they have a lot of options from the left side, there are still some question marks. Gage had been among the few healthy options from that group. The good news is that Miller made his 2026 Cactus League debut on Friday and struck out the side in one inning of work. He still has time to get 2 - 3 more appearances under his belt before the season begins.
Juan Sánchez looked like he was pitching his way into the competition this spring. He tallied 5.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and five walks. In 2024, he looked like he might emerge as a bullpen option in the spring, but he underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2025 season. Sánchez received an invite to the Arizona Fall League last year and made seven appearances.
The Giants have a lot of options from the left side that they need to work through before Sánchez becomes an option. If he throws the ball well in Triple-A, that could get the dialogue started.
On the other hand, Wilkin Ramos allowed seven earned runs in 5.1 innings this spring. Across seven minor league seasons, he has pitched to a 3.22 ERA. Ramos has also posted ground ball rates comfortably above 50 percent at nearly every minor league stop.
