Kyle Harrison reaches sad new low as SF Giants breathe a secret sigh of relief

SF Giants fans have followed Kyle Harrison’s season with the Milwaukee Brewers all year. It’s only natural given he was such a promising young arm with San Francisco and he was dealt to the Boston Red Sox in the Rafael Devers trade last year. Those are the kind of players you keep tabs on.

Earlier this year it was looking like the Zack Wheeler trade, when the Giants dealt Wheeler for a couple months of Carlos Beltran, but even worse given how great Harrison looked and how poorly Devers was performing at the plate.

Now, it’s been a complete 180-degree turn as Harrison has really struggled as of late to the point that there’s a decent chance he may not even be included on Milwaukee’s playoff roster. That would’ve been unthinkable back in June, but he has seemingly lost it.

Harrison is no longer a starter and in his last seven appearances he has a 9.51 ERA in 23 and 2/3 innings of work. He has allowed four earned runs in each of his last two outings, one of them without recording an out and the other while only going 1 and 2/3 innings. His velocity is down and the IL stint he had earlier in the season definitely seems like it derailed his year because it was nothing but smooth sailing up to that point.

Meanwhile, Devers completely flipped his season around too but for the better. He was just placed on the IL due to an injury, but he was on an absolute heater before that and has completely changed the complexion of the trade.

No one ever wants to actively cheer against a player who was traded away, unless maybe it’s A.J. Pierzynski, but the Giants probably have to be a bit relieved that Harrison wasn’t an All-Star and Cy Young candidate as it appeared he would be earlier this season.

Giants can feel better about the Devers trade for the time being

The Giants have had enough bad P.R. this season so the last thing they needed was the Bay Area native who grew up a Giants fan to become one of the best young arms in the game with another team.

He still could be. Harrison is only 25 years old so maybe all he needs is to get healthy and in 2027 he will return to the form we saw from him during the first half of 2026. But at least that possibility has been delayed a bit. One can only hope Harrison has a good career, but in a 2026 that has been so bad for the Giants seeing Harrison dominate and maybe even shut down the Dodgers in the playoffs might have been too much salt in the wound for one year.

No one should delight in Harrison’s struggles and it’s been sad to see him fall off like this, but the Giants at least look smarter for making the Devers trade than they did back in June.
