The SF Giants haven’t won a World Series since 2014, but to commemorate the twelfth anniversary of the Giants beating the Kansas City Royals in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, KNBR gave a little treat to fans by making the full radio call of that game available on YouTube.
You can access it right here.
This is really cool because while KNBR has released snippets of the audio from over the years and many fans have probably heard the iconic moments like the final out when the team wins the World Series, it’s so cool to hear Duane Kuiper, Mike Krukow, Jon Miller, and Dave Flemming calling the entirety of such an iconic game in Giants history.
If you don’t have time to listen to the entire two and a half hour broadcast, there’s a condensed cut which includes every out recorded by Madison Bumgarner after he entered the game in the fifth inning. They also include the mayhem that came on the bottom of the ninth inning when Gregor Blanco misplayed that ball in center field and for a second it seemed like Kansas City might tie it, but thankfully Bumgarner got Salvador Perez to pop one of the seemingly endless barrage of fastballs across the letters up to Pablo Sandoval to secure the franchise’s third title in a span of five years.
Mike Krukow's retirement makes KNBR release even cooler
Getting this audio a month after Krukow’s retirement makes it all the more special. Krukow and the entire broadcast team talked so much about how proud they are of those playoff broadcasts they did together as a quartet and hearing them talk about them made me want to listen to them in full since I didn’t get an opportunity to hear them call those games while I was living in Arizona during the championship years.
My memories are of Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, Harold Reynolds, and Tom Verducci calling the action on Fox. I don’t know how feasible it would be to do this, but how cool would it be if the Giants or someone out there was able to sync up the KNBR audio with the footage from every World Series game from that era? That’s something I would pay good money for so the Giants should get on that especially since nostalgia for Krukow is going to be at an all-time high.
The fact that the Giants even allowed all four of them to do those broadcasts is what makes it all the make special. It’s not conventional for the TV broadcasters to come over and call the games with the radio guys but that just speaks to the bond the four of them have and it would not have felt right if Kruk and Kuip were not in some way involved with those broadcasts so thank goodness they made that decision.
Baseball is likely about to come to a grinding halt in a month when the lockout goes into effect so if you’re feeling nostalgic for baseball next year and games start getting canceled then put on the KNBR broadcast of Game 7 to experience that incredible game in a whole new way.
