The SF Giants have been oh so quiet this offseason. Sure, they have made some minor moves but with so many free agents still out there, they have time to make some simple moves that would leave them in a much better spot.
We know the Giants are probably not going to spend a lot this offseason, but there are still affordable free agents to be had. All the Giants have to do is be smart and get some deals done.
3 simple free agent deals SF Giants can get done to save the offseason
Chris Bassitt
The Giants already signed Adrian Houser to give the starting rotation a little more depth, but they cannot stop there. Chris Bassitt would make a lot of sense in the rotation and he could be had at a reasonable price.
Last season he had a 3.96 ERA in 32 appearances on the season and he has made at least 30 starts or more every season since 2022 so the 36-year-old veteran can be relied upon to eat up innings.
The Giants could probably get him on a two-year deal in the $15-20 million per year range. If they can get him for roughly that price he would be a perfect No. 3 in the rotation.
Harrison Bader
The Giants simply have to improve their outfield defense in 2026 and signing Bader would go a long way towards doing that. He is a former Gold Glove winner and is coming off the strongest offensive season of his career.
In 2025 he slashed .277/.347/.449 with 17 home runs and 54 RBI. He probably will not replicate that with the Giants, but if he could slash something like .250/.330/.400 and be an above-average defender in right field the Giants should sign up for that on a two-year deal in the $10-15 million range.
Max Scherzer
There has been a lot of speculation that the Giants could sign Max Scherzer given his relationship with new Giants manager Tony Vitello. Maybe the Giants could take a chance on him with a one-year deal for $15 million roughly and hope that he can throw something like 100 innings in the regular season and be ready to go if they make the playoffs.
Having an experienced veteran arm like Scherzer could come in handy in a playoff series and he proved last season that he can still deliver some solid starts in October.
No, these signings are not the flashiest. But given the fact the Giants seem unlikely to splurge on any major players, these three signings would at least put them in a better position going into next season.
