After SF Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow’s emotional goodbye at the end of the 2026 season, now we must ponder who will replace him next season. It may be a more important question than who will play left field or what the Giants will do about the bullpen because it’s such an impossible task to try to replace a man who means so much to Giants fans and whose voice became so synonymous with Giants baseball.
Yet, someone, likely multiple someone’s, will have to try to fill those shoes. Former Giants first baseman J.T. snow made a little news during the week when he said that he had interest in the role and reached out to the Giants about it. Snow has called games for the Giants in the past and was a fan-favorite when he played for the team so he’d make sense as part of a rotation of options who call games next season and going forward.
The main candidates most people think of are Hunter Pence, Javier Lopez, and Shawn Estes but there are other dark horse options as well in addition to Snow. Let’s look at five other names who would make sense.
5 dark horses who could help replace Mike Krukow
Rich Aurilia
A teammate of Snow’s during the late 1990s and early 2000s teams, Aurilia was a great shortstop and was synonymous with the No. 35 until a guy named Brandon Crawford came around.
Aurilia does pre and post-game shows for the Giants during the season for NBC Sports Bay Area so he’s already on the payroll. He’d bring a unique perspective to the booth as a middle infielder which could be a nice fit with former second baseman Duane Kuiper.
George Kontos
Another member of the NBC Sports Bay Area pregame and postgame analyst team, Kontos usually always makes good points when he’s on TV and does a good job breaking things down as a former reliever. He’s not one of the main heroes of the dynasty era, but he was there for a lot of it so he’d be a nice little hit of nostalgia.
Sergio Romo
If you’re sensing a theme it’s very much on purpose. Romo also provides analysis for NBC Sports Bay Area and that’s a big factor because a big key in all of this is whether any of these guys live in San Francisco or can travel there with regularity.
Romo isn’t always the smoothest behind the microphone but he has the personality and humor to grow into the role and was obviously a huge part of the dynasty era in the 2010s.
Jeremy Affeldt
Another member of the “Core Four,” Affeldt has actually called some Giants games in the past. He filled in on occasion back in 2017 so he’s done it before and he currently co-hosts the Splash Hit Territory podcast so he remains tuned in to the team. He does live in Texas though so maybe he could call some games if the Giants play the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros on the road.
Dusty Baker
This one may be a little more out of the box, but former Giants manager Dusty Baker is beloved and is a great communicator. He currently works in San Francisco’s front office but that didn’t stop Lopez from calling games so he’s another option to consider.
It will be impossible to replace Krukow, but the Giants should cast a wide net and give a lot of guys a shot to see how they perform in the booth so keep an eye on these names going forward as potential candidates.
