It sure looks like the SF Giants are out on the Juan Soto sweepstakes

The SF Giants have been somewhat linked to star outfielder Juan Soto this offseason, but many fans are refusing to get their hopes up. The latest reports make it difficult to envision Soto ending up in San Francisco.

It has always seemed like a bit of a pipe dream with Soto. After the public failure to land Aaron Judge two offseasons ago and Shohei Ohtani last offseason, most fans assumed that the Giants were not going to land Soto.

It sure looks like the SF Giants will not land Juan Soto

In New York Post reporter Jon Heyman's recent column, he does not even mention the Giants once when discussing teams that Soto could potentially land with. Heyman named the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox as all making a push for Soto. The Giants were notably absent. There is some reporting that the Giants could have a meeting with Soto at some point, but it does not seem promising.

Additionally, Heyman raises the notion that West Coast teams would be at a disadvantage to sign Soto because his family is closer to the East Coast so it would be his preference to remain out east. Heyman does refute this slightly at the end of his column by saying Soto enjoyed his time with the San Diego Padres, but if there is any truth to this then the Giants are probably out.

Even if geography was definitely not a factor, it is hard to see how the Giants would be able to compete with the offers of the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers. If Soto wants to come out west, it will be to join the Dodgers. I cannot think of a reason why he would want to join the Giants other than maybe he really likes garlic fries.

All three of those teams are legitimate World Series contenders going into 2025 while the Giants are middle of the pack at best amongst MLB teams.

In a way, this process with Soto has been much better for Giants fans because we have not been strung along like we were the last two offseasons even if there was always a suspicion that the Giants would probably not land either star in the end.

With it seeming reasonably sure that the Giants will not get Soto, they can turn their focus to more realistic free agents like Ha-Seong Kim who could help the team improve up the middle at shortstop.

To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut: Soto it goes.
