The SF Giants made a change at the back of their bullpen recently by making Camilo Doval the closer once again while removing Ryan Walker from that role. Doval is known for being calm on the mound and we now know where that calmness stems from.
In Friday's game against the Miami Marlins, Doval recorded an impressive four-out save in his first action as the team's official closer since last season. It was also the first time that Doval's mother got to see him pitch in an MLB game.
SF Giants closer gets his trademark calmness from his mother
It was very special to see his mother, Rosa, look on from the stands as Doval pitched nearly flawlessly to secure a 2-0 victory for the Giants. As he recorded an out in the ninth inning, the cameras showed her not giving a huge reaction which seemed fitting given her son's nickname is "Tranquilo" for his preternatural calmness on the mound.
However, she did have a huge smile on her face when Doval struck out the last batter of the game on a 101 mile per hour fastball and she even gave a little wave to the batter as if to say, "buh bye."
After the game, the usually stoic Doval had a big grin on his face when he was asked about his mom. He spoke about the sacrifices she made in order to give him a chance to be a pitcher in the big leagues which is a great reminder of everything that goes into a player being able to fulfill their dreams out on the field.
Doval certainly has made the most of his opportunity in the big leagues. He was an All-Star in 2023 and is currently on an All-Star trajectory yet again in 2025. He has a 1.09 ERA on the year in 26 games and has not allowed a run since April 7th.
He is undoubtedly the team's best option as the closer right now. Walker has simply not been as sharp and consistent as he was last season so it makes sense that the pecking order in the bullpen has been shaken up a bit.
It was awesome to see Doval's mother cheer him on and get to see her son pitch in an MLB game. Let's hope that she is able to see him plenty more over the course of his career.
