Is there a spot on the 2025 SF Giants for this scrappy young infielder?
He showed promise as a utility man in 2024.
The SF Giants had breakout years from rookies Heliot Ramos and Tyler Fitzgerald, but they also got solid contributions from other young players. This includes the scrappy young infielder Brett Wisely who showcased his versatility in 2024.
For some time in 2024, Wisely served as the primary shortstop for the Giants. Nick Ahmed was injured and Marco Luciano proved to be wholly unfit for the position so the rookie Wisely stepped in and did quite well.
Brett Wisely can be a solid bench piece for SF Giants in 2024
He was the starting shortstop for most of June finishing the month hitting .296/.325/.444 and had his highlight of the year on June 28th with his walk off home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His bat cooled off precipitously the rest of the year and he finished with an unimpressive slash line of .238/.278/.345 with 4 home runs and 31 RBI in 252 at-bats and 91 games played.
Defensively he was solid. He only made one error at shortstop in 266 and 1/3 innings. He made 2 errors at second base where he played 335 and 1/3 innings. He proved that he is a solid option up the middle.
Wisely's struggles at the plate opened the door for Fitzgerald to take over at shortstop. But even though Wisely did not finish the year as strong as he started it, he still showed enough in 2024 to give him a chance to compete for a bench role next season.
Even when he was struggling later in the year, he was still able to get creative and manufacture offense. In the second to last game of the year against the St. Louis Cardinals he laid down a bunt with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th that was thrown wildly down the first base line by the pitcher and allowed Fitzgerald to score from first base. He even led the team with 4 bunts for a base hit.
Manager Bob Melvin spoke highly of Wisely when he filled in at shortstop. Melvin has also spoken about how he hopes the 2025 Giants can be better at manufacturing offense when they are not getting hits which is something that Wisely has proven he can do.
Wisely will probably be in competition with Casey Schmitt for a role on the bench to start next season. Based on what he did in 2024, if he has a strong Spring Training he could definitely be a solid bench piece for the Giants who can reliably play at second base, shortstop, and third base.
