Spring training stats do not really mean anything, but you still want the best hitters on your team to at least get a couple hits to boost their confidence. Should SF Giants fans be at all concerned that left-handed slugger Rafael Devers has yet to record a hit?
The short answer is no. Devers should be fine and really the only thing the Giants care about is if he makes it through spring training healthy. He did have a bit of a scare with his hamstring which kept him out of the lineup for a little over a week, but he is now back in the lineup getting at least a few plate appearances each game.
Rafael Devers should be fine despite slow start to spring training
Devers has had 19 plate appearances in the Cactus League so far and he has yet to record a hit. He's reached base once via walk and has struck out seven times. Those are not ideal numbers, but it is worth keeping in mind that this is his first ever Cactus League. Every prior spring training in his career has been spent in Florida so maybe he is still adjusting to that dry Arizona heat.
He is still being asked about his time with the Boston Red Sox although he has repeatedly taken the high road. He clearly wants to put all of that drama behind him even though it has been fascinating to watch that trade grow more complicated as the Red Sox have sold off many of the players they got from the Giants in that deal.
The three-time All-Star did not put up the greatest numbers after joining the Giants last season, slashing .236/.347/.460 with 20 home runs and 51 runs batted in across 90 games. Yet, it is worth remembering he was adjusting to a new team, new coast, and new ballpark. Those are not easy adjustments to make on the fly.
Year two in San Francisco should go smoother. The Giants are counting on him to be their first baseman and he definitely showed some progress at the position last year.
It doesn't really matter if he hits all that well in Scottsdale. Sometimes it almost feels like a curse when a veteran player gets hot in spring training as they usually go cold at the plate in the first month of the regular season.
Devers should be just fine, but maybe if he hit a few dingers it would calm the nerves of more skittish fans ahead of Opening Day.
