How SF Giants can play mini-spoiler to the Dodgers in final week of season

The SF Giants don’t have a ton to play for the rest of this season other than guys trying to make a good audition for next year’s club, but they will face the Los Angeles Dodgers six times in the last week or so of the season and they have a great opportunity to play mini-spoiler.

The Dodgers have already clinched the National League West so their ticket to the postseason is already punched and they will have a chance to win their third consecutive World Series title. Yet, they are currently the No. 2 seed in the NL so getting a first-round bye and winning home field advantage for all of the playoffs is still on the line.

Entering Friday night’s game against San Francisco, the Dodgers have a record of 93-60 which is two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the NL and four games ahead of the Atlanta Braves who currently have the third-best NL record.

The Dodgers seem pretty likely to at worst be the No. 2 seed in the NL which means they would skip the Wild Card round and play the best remaining seed in the divisional round, but if the Giants can prevent them from getting the No. 1 seed in the NL that means the Brewers could have home field advantage over the Dodgers if they face each other in the NLCS.

Home field advantage for the World Series is also on the line. Right now the Dodgers have the same record as the Tampa Bay Rays, the team with the best record in the American League. If the Giants could win some of these remaining games against LA then that could give Tampa Bay the home field edge if they face the Dodgers in the World Series.

Giants can still take season series against Dodgers

Of course, the Dodgers already won the World Series last year even though the Toronto Blue Jays had home field advantage so they know how to get it done wherever, but home field advantage can still matter.

San Francisco does have a 4-3 record against LA on the year so a good goal would be to take three of these six games and win the season series against the Dodgers. At the very least, playing the Dodgers tough is a good thing for the young guys on the team so they know the Dodgers aren’t some unbeatable behemoth going forward.

It’s a far cry from the 2021 season when every single game mattered coming down the stretch for the Giants to win the NL West over the Dodgers, but at least it provides a little extra motivation for San Francisco to try to play mini-spoiler to LA.
