The MLB offseason has been fairly quiet for most teams, but with Alex Bregman signing with the Chicago Cubs maybe some more dominos will fall. The New York Yankees and Cody Bellinger are reportedly at an impasse which could open the door for the SF Giants to swoop in and get a deal done with Scott Boras.

The Yankees have reportedly offered Bellinger a five-year deal worth at least $30 million per year, but Boras and his client reportedly want a longer deal for more money so the two sides may be at a stalemate. The Yankees may have to look elsewhere if they cannot get something done.

Maybe this creates enough of an opening for the Giants to come in and give Bellinger the deal he seeks. San Francisco has been connected to Bellinger throughout the offseason, not necessarily as an aggressive pursuer but more as a team that has checked in on his market.

The Giants do not seem to be in the mood to add another expensive slugger, but the opportunity is there if they want it. Perhaps if they go up to six years and give Bellinger north of $30 million per year that would be enough to get a deal done.

Of course, a deal like that would carry a lot of risk for the Giants. Bellinger is 30 years old so an expensive deal like that which would take him into his mid-to-late thirties would probably not age that well even if he would represent a major upgrade in the outfield in 2026.

As of right now, it seems like the Giants do not have much of a plan in right field which is their one open spot in the outfield. They may decide to roll with their internal options like Drew Gilbert, Luis Matos, and Jerar Encarnacion, but that trio does not inspire a ton of confidence.

Adding a proven power bat like Bellinger would give the Giants a formidable lineup on paper. Sticking him in the middle of the order with Rafael Devers would give opposing pitchers nightmares.

But while it is fun to dream about, it just does not seem like the Giants are going to splurge this offseason. The opportunity is there for them to make a run at a Bellinger or Kyle Tucker, but restraint has defined the offseason for the Giants thus far so a move like that would come out of the blue.
