Houston Astros among the teams to check in on SF Giants starter Logan Webb

As the Houston Astros look for rotation help, they have turned to the SF Giants for a solution. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Astros have checked in on starter Logan Webb but have been told he is not going anywhere.

The Giants are open to dealing all of their rental players before the trade deadline. They are also hopeful that they could move one of their more expensive contracts. This includes Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames. It could even include Jung Hoo Lee.

However, the odds of moving any of those contracts before the trade deadline appear low. Lee's contract has some inherent obstacles, and Chapman and Adames have a no-trade claus clause.

While they are open to moving many players from the roster, they have also been adamant about their desire to keep Logan Webb. Buster Posey has expressed this, and it continues to be conveyed through trade rumors. This could be a sign that Webb is unavailable, or it could be viewed as a signal for interested teams to put forth better offers.

It does not hurt to ask. Webb would be one of the more valuable trade chips available if the Giants decided to broach that topic. The veteran hurler has two years remaining on a five-year, $90 million extension that he signed in 2023. That has proven to be one of the better bargains in baseball, as he has among the best pitchers.

Webb has posted a 3.93 ERA, 3.43 FIP, 1.11 WHIP, 7.0 K/9, and a 3.10 SO/W rate across 119 innings for the Giants this season. This includes a solid 52.1 percent ground ball rate. Webb also earned his third NL All-Star nod.

The right-handed pitcher has assumed a heavy workload in recent seasons, surpassing the 200-inning mark every year since 2023. That streak could be in jeopardy this year, as Webb missed much of May with a knee ailment.

When the 29-year-old pitcher returned to the mound, he strung together one of the best stretches in his career. This culminated with him earning NL Pitcher of the Month honors for June.

There are not many pitchers that teams can rely on to take the ball every fifth day while still being effective, but Webb is one of them. It is no surprise that teams continue to check on his availability, but there appears to be no movement on that front.
