Keyner Martinez will give SF Giants fans a glimpse of his upside later today. The hard-throwing pitching prospect has been tabbed to start the Spring Breakout game, per Justice delos Santos of The Mercury News.
Hard-throwing SF Giants pitching prospect tabbed to start Spring Breakout game
The roster will feature some of the organization’s top prospects, including Luis Hernández, Josuar Gonzalez, Gavin Kilen, and Dakota Jordan. The Giants landed two of the top prospects on the international market in successive years with Gonzalez and Hernández.
While Gonzalez is on the Spring Breakout roster, he will not play due to a hamstring injury.
Hernández is slated to skip the Dominican Summer League in favor of moving stateside. Where he begins the year will depend on how he performs in minor league camp, but starting the season in the Arizona Complex League with Gonzalez is one option.
Keyner Martinez will take the hill against the Cincinnati Reds Spring Breakout roster at 6:05 PM at Scottsdale Stadium. He was one of the many young Giants pitching prospects to pop up last summer.
Argenis Cayama and Luis De La Torre are a couple other pop-up arms from last summer. Even Jacob Bresnahan can be lumped into that group after earning California League Pitcher of the Year last season.
The strength of the Giants’ farm system is middle infield depth. However, they have a bench of young, protectable arms. If any of them take another step forward in 2026, they could land on some top-100 prospect lists.
Unfortunately, Cayama and Bresnahan are not on tonight’s roster. De La Torre will likely follow Martinez at some point tonight.
Martinez gets the nod to start the game. It is a nice reward after a solid 2025 campaign. He pitched to a 2.21 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 21 walks in 69.1 innings split across two levels. A subtle accomplishment from last season was that Martinez nearly reached 70 innings in his age-20 season. He is in a good position to add to that threshold in 2026.
On the mound, the young righty features a mid-90’s fastball that gets plenty of armside movement and carry up in the zone. He mixes in a low-80’s slider and a changeup that is still a work in progress. Martinez is also a fiery competitor.
