SF Giants legend Barry Bonds hit 762 home runs in his 22-year career, and he had plenty of multi-homer games as well. Hall of Famer Chipper Jones shared a story about how Bonds predicted he would hit two home runs in a game, and then rubbed it in once he did.

Bonds stories always seem to land well. Jones is among the Hall of Fame players who have supported Bonds, and continue to recognize him as one of the best to ever play the game.

The longtime Atlanta Braves slugger shared a story about facing off against the Giants in 1997. The game took place on June 8, 1997.

Jones arrived at Candlestick Park before the game, along with future Hall of Famer John Smoltz. As Jones tells it, Bonds spots them and tells Smoltz he is going to hit at least one home run off of him and maybe more. Bonds uses more colorful language, so I would recommend checking out the link above.

What happened? The Giants secured a 5-3 win over Atlanta. Smoltz gave up three home runs, including two solo shots to Bonds. The other was to Jeff Kent. Shawn Estes completed seven innings that day, and Rod Beck closed out the game for the save.

In many instances, that would be the end of the story. Bonds did exactly what he said he was going to do. That by itself is a cool story.

Jones adds that Bonds boarded Atlanta’s team bus after the game, and then rubbed it in. According to Jones’ retelling of the story, Bonds yelled “Smoltzie, I told you I was gonna get you. I told you was gonna get you.”

There are only a few players in baseball history who can do that type of thing. Of course, Bonds has 762 home runs and seven NL MVP Awards to his ledger, so he fits that description.

There you have it. If Bonds tells you before a game that he is going to hit a home run off of you, then I would bet good money that it is going to happen. Not only that, but he will remind you of that after the fact.
