There are a lot of narratives being thrown around with respect to the type of player Rafael Devers is. Count Pedro Martínez as among the many who are in support of the new SF Giants bat and believes his departure from the Boston Red Sox has been misconstrued.
Hall of Fame pitcher shares insight into the type of player the SF Giants are getting in Rafael Devers
The tension surfaced right before spring training, when the Red Sox signed veteran third baseman Alex Bregman. Devers, who had spent his entire career at third base until that point, was bumped to the DH spot. The veteran infielder was frustrated with the lack of communication before the signing and the ensuing decision to move him off his primary position.
Then, when Tristan Casas went down with a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox considered moving Devers to first base. This put him in an uncomfortable position, as he had no time to prepare for the position beforehand. Devers was not receptive to the idea and did not appear at first base.
This has led to speculation about what type of player and teammate Devers is. Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martínez voiced his support of Devers on TBS and believed that the Red Sox mishandled the three-time All-Star:
"I was shocked, because if you try to sell to me, knowing Raffy Devers, that Raffy is a bad teammate or he's not a team player, you're lying. You're gonna tell me he's a bad influence in the clubhouse? He's not... The thing they mishandled from the get-go... this should've been in the hands of baseball people, not front-office people."Pedro Martínez
Martínez continued to voice his support of Devers in a different segment as well. In this segment, he added that he believes that the left-handed bat has found a nice landing spot due to the presence of Buster Posey.
Interestingly, Martínez was critical of Boston's handling of Devers because the problems were handled by front-office people rather than baseball people. Craig Breslow, a former major league pitcher, and Chief Baseball Officer for the Red Sox orchestrated the trade with the Giants.
The Giants and Red Sox are led by former major league players. The difference here seems to be leadership styles. There was a breakdown in communication between Boston and Devers, whereas Posey is known as a good and direct communicator.
This all all in the rearview mirror now, as Devers has begun his San Francisco career. The Giants are seemingly the beneficiary in the Red Sox's mishandling of all this. Plus, it sounds like they are getting a good teammate as well.
