With the season over, we are going back to give every SF Giants player a grade for their 2025 efforts. Today, let's take a look at the infielders, and see what final grade they receive for the past season.
Grading every SF Giants infielder in 2025
3B Matt Chapman: B+
Chapman was unable to follow up his 7.1 bWAR, 11th-place MVP finish from 2024 with a better season, but he was still the best player in the Giants infield in 2025. He led the team with 4.1 bWAR, and finished with a 120 OPS+, his fourth straight season with an OPS+ of 107 or higher. His slugging did take a dip, as he hit six fewer home runs and 16 fewer doubles, though he did play in 26 fewer games due to injuries.
SS Willy Adames: B-
Adames was good for the Giants, and was on fire for most of the second half of the season. However, there is a certain expectation that comes with being signed to the most expensive free agent contract in franchise history, and Adames did not live up to it. Yes, he hit 30 home runs and broke the Barry Bonds curse. Yes, he put up 3.6 bWAR, his best season since 2022. But it's hard to overlook his first half of the season. He had a .592 OPS in March & April, and followed it up with a .652 OPS in May and a .675 OPS in June.
1B Rafael Devers: B
Devers was solid after being traded from Boston to the Giants, but his numbers did slip from the monster numbers he was putting up in Boston. Still, he hit 20 home runs in just 90 games for the Giants, and his 130 OPS+ did lead the team.
2B Christian Koss: C+
The 27-year old rookie second baseman did not do much at the plate for the Giants, but his defense shown during his 74 game stint with the team. He was worth 1.6 bWAR, and finished with an at least respectable 94 OPS, mostly off the success of a .264 batting average.
2B Casey Schmitt: C
Schmitt put up a respectable .305 OBP and .401 slugging, helping finish with a near-perfectly average OPS+ of 101. He has solid pop, hitting 12 home-runs and 15 two-baggers. His defense held him back from any more than 0.6 bWAR.
2B Tyler Fitzgerald: D
Fitzgerald is lucky he does not receive an F. His defense saves him, and helped him accumulate positive WAR (0.9 bWAR). However, his .278 OBP and 74 OPS+ were among the worst on the team.
1B Dominic Smith: B-
Smith did what he was brought in to do; he hit right-handed pitching well, with a .436 slugging and .779 OPS against righties in 198 plate appearances.
1B Wilmer Flores: C+
Flores would have gotten a C, but he gets a bump to C+ in recognition of how clutch he was on offense. He drove in 71 runs and hit 16 long balls, but his overall numbers were weak and the veteran finished with just 0.3 bWAR. It seems unlikely he will be back in 2026.
1B LaMonte Wade Jr: F
Yes, Wade was a fan favorite, but he needed to go. In 50 games, he was worth -1.2 bWAR and had a 58 OPS+ at the time he was designated for assignment.
The Giants have a lot of money tied up in their infield between Chapman, Adames, and Devers, so let's hope they can all earn A's for their efforts in 2026.
