The SF Giants have made it very clear that they have a Plan A going into the 2026 MLB Draft. They obviously want shortstop Roch Cholowsky to fall to them at the No. 4 pick and have been trying to make it clear to the three teams ahead of them that they’ll do whatever it takes to get him.
While there was a time when Cholowsky was once considered the consensus top pick by many, that reality is much less clear now. Some think the Chicago White Sox could go with Grady Emerson or Vahn Lackey at No. 1 overall and the fact that the Minnesota Twins, who hold the No. 2 overall pick, did not meet with Cholowsky at the recent MLB Draft combine makes one wonder if the Twins would pick him.
Maybe president of baseball operations Buster Posey is hoping for a repeat of when he was a draft prospect out of Florida State and word broke on the eve of the draft that he wouldn’t sign unless he received a record-breaking signing bonus. If a similar rumor comes out about Cholowsky ahead of this year’s draft maybe those three teams decide they don’t want to have to pay more than they think is fair for the UCLA prospect.
It’s still a long shot and most analysts would be pretty shocked if it happened. Yet, the Giants are clearly still trying probably because they know it may be their best hope to change the fortunes of the franchise.
Landing Cholowsky could help Giants turn franchise around
What if the Giants do somehow land Cholowsky next month? Then, what if they are able to trade away some of their big contracts like Willy Adames which would open the door for Cholowsky to be the team’s shortstop of the future?
That could completely change how a lot of fans feel about the state of the franchise. They could go from an underperforming team with overpaid veterans to a young, upstart team built to win in the future.
There are no guarantees that plan would work but it’s more appetizing than thinking about Adames, Devers, and Matt Chapman getting a year older and still being owed all of that money.
Why not go in on a guy who has a lot of promise and is a Bay Area native? That could buy this regime more time and help change the perception of the franchise which is badly needed right now.
