For those who were not a fan of the SF Giants trading for Rafael Devers last year, you may want to turn away. Kyle Harrison has been really good this season for the Milwaukee Brewers. Like, really good and he just turned in a great start against the San Diego Padres.
He delivered five scoreless innings against San Diego and struck out seven batters. At least he's nice enough to deal against NL West teams. His ERA is now down to 2.09 on the season in eight starts and he has struck out 48 batters and walked 13 in 38 and 2/3 innings of work.
Kyle Harrison's dominance makes Rafael Devers trade look even worse
He has been masterful and the Brewers have seemingly churned out yet another effective young starter. Jacob Misiorowski has also been phenomenal for the Brewers this season.
The Giants traded Harrison as part of the Devers trade with the Boston Red Sox last season. Apparently Boston was not that high on him as they traded him to the Brewers so at least the Giants won’t be the only team with egg on its face if Harrison turns into an ace.
The trade was looking pretty terrible for the Giants earlier this year when Harrison was dealing and Devers looked like he had forgotten how to hit. Thankfully Devers has gotten hot in May but the Brewers are 24-17 while the Giants are 18-26 so it’s clear which team is feeling better about things right now.
It’s too early to say the Giants lost the Devers trade because the Red Sox are in shambles right now, but if things continue on their current course maybe somehow both the Giants and Red Sox will have lost the Devers trade while the Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers could emerge looking the best of anyone since the Brewers have made Harrison look great and James Tibbs III, who the Giants traded to Boston in the Devers trade and then Boston sent to the Dodgers in exchange for Dustin May, is tearing it up in Triple-A for LA and could get promoted soon.
What will be really interesting to watch is if and when Devers and Harrison face each other. The Giants visit Milwaukee to face the Brewers at the start of June in a four-game series so there seems to be a pretty decent chance they will face off in that series and then Milwaukee will visit San Francisco at the end of July.
Those will be fun at-bats to watch but they’d be more fun if the Giants can start to win some games and actually look like a contender because if they are a bad team until 2033 then the Devers trade is going to look like a mistake no matter what he does especially if Harrison continues to looks dominant.
