Full haul from SF Giants' Patrick Bailey trade revealed as team drafts another pitcher

Almost like a "player to be named later" trade.

The SF Giants selected right-handed pitcher Jackson Flora with the No. 4 overall pick in the MLB Draft. That's not the only top-30 pick they had, though.

Back in May, the SF Giants swung a surprising trade with the Cleveland Guardians that sent catcher Patrick Bailey to Cleveland in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson and the No. 29 overall pick in the MLB Draft.

It was almost like a "player to be named later" trade except the Giants got to pick a player from the draft pool rather than Cleveland's farm system, and now we know the other player they got as they selected left-handed high school pitcher Carson Bolemon at No. 29 overall.

He is 6-foot-4 and 19 years old and has a lot of upside. He has great overall stuff with a mid-90s fastball and two plus breaking pitches. Bolemon threw two no-hitters and five shutouts in 2026 with a 0.17 ERA. It's high school, but that is still really impressive.

He may very well be one of the best high school arms in the draft so it seems like the Giants may come out of this draft with the best college arm and one of the most promising high school arms.

MLB teams do not usually draft for need but the Giants could sure use some promising young pitchers in their farm system. Their top prospects are pretty much all position players so Flora and Bolemon should give the farm system a boost on the pitching side.

Giants seem like they are the early winner of the Bailey trade

The Giants have to feel pretty good about the Bailey trade trade overall. Since joining the Guardians, Bailey has hit .213/.260/.348 with two home runs and eight runs batted in which is not very impressive, but it's a pretty marked improvement over what he was doing with the Giants at the plate prior to being traded.

There may be some regret over how the trade may have affected the pitching staff and the team's defense behind the plate as Bailey certainly had familiarity with a lot of pitchers and it has not been the smoothest transition to the likes of Daniel Susac, Eric Haase, Jesus Rodriguez, and Drew Cavanaugh. Bailey is a two-time Gold Glove winner for a reason.

Still, Bailey was just doing so little offensively that the Giants had to try to find an upgrade. That upgrade may not be on the roster right now but maybe they can get one at the trade deadline or in the offseason.

Plus, Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson is an intriguing prospect. He pitched well in Double-A Richmond after the trade, posting a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings of work. He has struggled a bit in Triple-A Sacramento with a 5.02 ERA in 14 and 1/3 innings but he's still a guy who could make it to the big leagues as early as this season.

We may not fully know who won the trade until we see what Bolemon turns into, but the Giants probably feel good about things right now. Bailey hasn't turned into a .300 hitter with Cleveland and the Giants now have two promising young southpaws in the farm system who may help the big league team out down the road.

Here are the rest of San Francisco's picks in the draft. They have three more selections today and then will make the rest of their picks on Sunday.
