An old friend has a new home as Tyler Beede has landed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs. The former first-round pick of the SF Giants has bounced around a lot in recent seasons but maybe he can make his way back to the big leagues with Chicago.

Just last season, Beede was pitching in independent ball with the Long Island Ducks. That came after he held a pro day earlier in the year to try to extend his career. It seems it worked as Beede could potentially even make the big league club with a strong showing in spring training.

The 32-year-old has been all around in recent seasons, pitching in Mexico and Japan and bouncing around different minor league teams.

2025 saw Beede make seven appearances with the Minnesota Twins' Triple-A affiliate where he had an ERA of 8.00. With the Long Island Ducks he had a 5.48 ERA in five starts and then in a brief stint in the Mexican League he had a 7.43 ERA in three starts.

Apparently, the Cubs saw something that inspired them to take a flyer on him. The last time he pitched in the big leagues was with the Cleveland Guardians in 2024. He had a 8.36 ERA in 13 appearances that season and has never really found his stride in the big leagues.

When he was with the Giants, he always had promising stuff but was never able to put everything together. He made his big league debut with San Francisco in 2018 and got a long look with the Giants in 2019 when he made 24 appearances and 22 starts, posting a 5.08 ERA.

The Giants held onto him until 2022 to see if maybe he could figure things out, but it never happened and they DFA'd him which led to him being claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Beede is not the only former Giant named Tyler who has resurfaced with the Cubs this offseason. The Cubs signed Tyler Austin to a one-year deal after years overseas.

The fact that there is a greater-than-zero chance that the Giants will play the Cubs this season and they will face both Austin and Beede makes the mind reel.

It may not be super likely that Beede ends up back in the majors, but he is still kicking around which is remarkable after all the places he's been.
