Former SF Giants outfielder hangs up his spikes after six-year MLB career

Alex Dickerson has finally decided to hang up his cleats. After a six-year major league career, his wife, Jen, shared on Instagram that the former SF Giants outfielder has officially retired.

Dickerson was originally a 48th-round pick by the Washington Nationals out of Poway High School in the 2008 draft, but he did not sign. Yes, they had 50 rounds back then, folks. He was later selected in the third round of the 2011 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

In 2013, the left-handed bat was traded to the San Diego Padres in a deal that sent Jaff Decker and Miles Mikolas to Pittsburgh. Since then, Mikolas has had a stint overseas, but he is currently pitching for the Nationals.

In 2019, Dickerson joined the Giants in a trade that sent minor league reliever Franklin Van Gurp to San Diego. Van Gurp has been out of affiliated ball for several years now, but he was throwing in independent ball as recently as last year.

When Dickerson was shipped to the Giants, he joined an organization that was very much in a transition from the old regime. That front office scoured the waiver wire, hoping to find a major league role player. There were some successes with this approach, and Dickerson was one of them.

The veteran outfielder made an immediate impact with San Francisco. In his first game following the trade, he tallied three hits, including a grand slam, with six RBI in five at-bats. This began a chant that folks continue to remember fondly.

Over the next couple of seasons, Dickerson provided a boost to the lineup. His production tailed off in 2021, when he posted a .725 OPS with 13 home runs and 38 RBI in 312 plate appearances. Dickerson was non-tendered after the 2021 season and became a free agent. He caught in briefly with the Atlanta Braves to begin the 2022 season. That proved to be his last stint in the majors.

Over the past few seasons, the 36-year-old outfielder has played in the World Baseball Classic, overseas, and in independent ball. His most recent run was with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League, where he posted a .903 OPS with eight home runs and 34 RBI in 185 plate appearances.
