Former SF Giants fan favorite reveals team entertained reunion during the offseason

Would this have made any sense?

It seemed pretty obvious in the final game of the SF Giants’ 2025 season that it would be Wilmer Flores’ last game with the team. He was removed and fans gave him a standing ovation which was a fitting send off for him. Yet, Flores recently revealed that he and the Giants seriously talked about a potential reunion.

A recent article in The Athletic profiled Flores and how basically no MLB team wanted to take a chance on him even though he had a solid 2025 campaign with San Francisco. Flores did reveal that he and the Giants had a dialogue but ultimately did not come to a deal:

“I went back and forth with the Giants asking if they wanted a reunion, but they said they were looking for a second baseman before they signed Arraez. If they didn’t sign Arraez, they said maybe I had a chance to come back. But they signed Arraez, and it never happened," Flores said.

It’s interesting the Giants had any interest in Flores. It was clear after the team acquired Rafael Devers last season that Flores was not exactly a great fit for the roster any longer. It makes one wonder if the Giants had any dialogue with Dominic Smith who has had a great season in 2026 with the Atlanta Braves after a solid 2025 with San Francisco.

As it all worked out, signing Arraez was a really good move by the Giants. He’s been his usual consistent self at the plate and he has turned into one of the best defensive second basemen in the game so even though this year has gone terribly for San Francisco, Arraez has been one of the few bright spots.

Flores was arguably San Francisco's best player in the first half of 2025

If one can remember back to a year ago, the Giants were actually quite good and looked like they might be a playoff team. Flores was arguably the team’s best hitter and he was providing clutch hits and driving in runs at the same rate as some of the best players in the game like Aaron Judge.

It always seemed pretty obvious that Flores would not be able to keep up that pace, but it was awesome to see him turn back the clock like that and look that good at the plate.

While this decade of SF Giants baseball has been marked mainly by mediocrity, the team has still had some players who were very easy to root for. Wilmer Flores absolutely fits that bill but he is now in the Mexican League trying to keep his career going.

He’s put up solid numbers in Mexico so far as a member of the Toros de Tijuana. As of this writing he is hitting .329/.422/.500 with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. Maybe he will do enough to draw the attention of some big league teams.

Don’t expect a reunion with San Francisco though. They have too many guys who can only play first base as it is so Flores is not needed right now even though he will always be thought of as a very good Giant.
