The SF Giants have had a number of pitchers stand out so far in spring training and one of them is Keaton Winn. The 28-year-old was seen a potential future fixture of San Francisco's rotation a few years ago, but injuries have now relegated him to bullpen duties. He is taking advantage of his opportunity though and he may have Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star Mitch Keller to thank for that.

Winn was recently interviewed and was asked about how he and Keller live near each other in Iowa. Keller is a Cedar Rapids guy who made the National League All-Star team in 2023 and has been a consistent presence in Pittsburgh's rotation since 2022.

Winn grew up not too far from Keller in a small Iowa town and the two live near each other now and train together in the offseason. One can bet Winn has been the beneficiary of some pointers from Keller so he has to be a nice resource to rely on as he is still trying to break through at the big league level.

2026 may be the year Keaton Winn can establish himself with SF Giants

So far in Cactus League play, Winn has looked really good. He has allowed just one run in five and 1/3 innings of work as he's allowed three hits, two walks, and has struck out five batters. It may not be enough to make the Opening Day roster with other young pitchers like Trevor McDonald also looking strong, but it is a positive development nonetheless.

A couple of years ago, Winn looked promising in some appearances with the Giants. His high-velocity fastball and nasty splitter seemed to make for a deadly combination, but injuries and a poor 2024 in which he had a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts, and then a 2025 in which he made just seven appearances with the Giants and pitched 10 innings, have made him a bit of an afterthought.

But with a new coaching staff led by manager Tony Vitello, all of the guys in camp are being seen with fresh eyes. Winn has to have impressed the new regime with how he has looked so far, so it would not be a shock if he ends up with the team at some point this season.

Whether that ends up being as a long reliever, a spot starter, or in some other capacity, with the bullpen as wide open as it is there is a good chance the Giants will have to cycle through guys until they settle on the right combination of arms. Winn may just be able to win a spot at some point this year based on how he's looked thus far.
