Drew Gilbert has somehow topped weird SF Giants celebration from last season

If it works, why not?

So far this season, SF Giants outfielder Drew Gilbert has been pretty tame for the most part. We’re grading on a curve of course, but by his standards wearing a bandana with pickles on it and sparring with manager Tony Vitello in the dugout doesn’t even register on the weirdness scale.

Yet, he couldn't contain the weirdness forever and after Monday night’s victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers Gilbert delivered in a very big way.

Most outfielders do a little celebration after the team wins and Gilbert celebrated in his own, uh, unique way.

We won’t editorialize on that one. Make of it what you will, but it is no surprise to see Gilbert back in the middle of a weird celebration. Giants fans will remember him getting choked by Matt Chapman in the dugout last year after home runs and that weirdness seemed to coincide with the team turning things around and making a late-season playoff push so maybe there’s a correlation there. This latest celebration seems to be an escalation of some earlier ones this season and definitely seems to have topped last season's choking so I'm almost scared to think what might happen next.

Gilbert has played pretty well so far this season. He’s hitting .231/.296/.338 with two home runs and seven runs batted in. His stats against left-handed pitching are cause for concern though as he has no hits in 14 at-bats.

The return of Harrison Bader from the IL will certainly mean less playing time for Gilbert. Bader was hitting very poorly before he went on the IL but that is likely because he was dealing with his hamstring strain.

Perhaps the two can form a platoon in the outfield with Bader starting against lefties and Gilbert against righties, but Bader is a veteran so he’s probably going to get the bulk of the starts in center as long as he’s healthy. Bader got the start on Monday night and recorded one hit in five at-bats.

Still, Gilbert can impact a team from the bench. His energy is infectious so if the Giants can get on a little bit of a roll then don’t be surprised to see him getting choked or doing more of whatever he did to the outfielders last night.

He’s a unique character, but fans seem to like him and he’s at the very least entertaining to watch. Every team needs a spark plug like him so hopefully Gilbert can continue to bring the energy for San Francisco the rest of this season as they look to claw out of the ditch they've dug themselves.
