Dodgers' victory lap over SF Giants can stop after latest roster shuffle

Maybe the SF Giants did not give the Dodgers that great of a gift after all.

SF Giants fans may remember veteran reliever Lou Trivino from earlier this year. He had a rough time with the Giants and was let go before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. After some early success, his recent DFA has ended LA's victory lap.

The Dodgers designated Trivino for assignment recently. He pitched fairly well for Los Angeles overall, sporting a 3.76 ERA in 26 and 1/3 innings pitched. It seemed like the Dodgers may have been wise to poach him from San Francisco given how he was pitching. However, his last few outings were not as sharp which is probably why the Dodgers decided to DFA him.

Trivino was actually on San Francisco's Opening Day roster after a strong spring training earned him a spot on the team. It also did not hurt that Trivino had ties with manager Bob Melvin dating back to their time together in Oakland where Trivino was once a trusted closer for BoMel.

Unfortunately, Trivino's reunion with Melvin was fairly short-lived as the reliever struggled with the Giants to the tune of a 5.84 ERA in 11 appearances and 12 and 1/3 innings pitched. Trivino was eventually DFA'd by the Giants in May to make room for Kyle Harrison who, of course, is now in the Boston Red Sox organization. Then, LA scooped Trivino up shortly thereafter.

Thankfully, the Giants have not missed Trivino too much in the bullpen. Their relievers have been some of the best in all of baseball with Tyler Rogers delivering a stellar year, Randy Rodríguez earning a well-deserved All-Star nod, and Camilo Doval returning to form in the closer role.

One could argue the bullpen is a huge reason why the team is still right in the thick of the NL playoff picture despite the struggles they have had on offense throughout the year. The Giants are going to need their bullpen to continue to be stellar the rest of the year.

While losing Trivino to the Dodgers looked costly at one point, it seems like overall the Giants did not miss out on all that much. Their bullpen has remained strong and Trivino has been DFA'd by LA so the victory lap can mercifully come to an end.
