With how well SF Giants catcher Daniel Susac has been hitting lately, it was only a matter of time before he started getting more playing time. Manager Tony Vitello said that Susac and Patrick Bailey may start splitting time behind the plate and, true to his word, Susac got the start on Friday with ace Logan Webb on the mound.

That's a big deal because Webb and Bailey have built up a rapport over the last few seasons. No one understands Webb better than Bailey so for Susac to get the start over him shows that the Giants really feel like the rookie is the superior option behind the plate right now.

SF Giants give a huge vote of confidence for Daniel Susac

He had another solid night, recording two hits in five at-bats including a double. On the season he is now slashing .524/.545/.714 with five runs batted in. He's only drawn one walk, but he has also only struck out twice so he is doing a lot of things right at the plate.

Susac's also been a solid presence behind the plate. While he has a ways to go until he can be considered superior to a two-time Gold Glove winner in Bailey, he has still been above average.

His arm is strong so that's not an issue, but something to watch is how he is able to handle the pitching staff if he does get more starts. There will inevitably be instances where he is not on the same page as pitchers and there are miscommunications. That comes with the territory as a rookie catcher but the Giants will probably be willing to stomach that so long as he continues to hit.

This doesn't mean that Bailey is completely out of the picture. Maybe Susac goes cold for a few weeks and Bailey starts to get hot and reclaims his spot as the starting catcher. It's a long season, but it's clear that Susac has provided something to the team whenever he's been out there. Whether it's an infusion of youth and excitement along with the fact that he keeps on getting hits, it certainly feels like the Giants have a better chance to win when he's in the lineup.

If Susac continues to catch Webb going forward, that may really signal a changing of the guard at catcher. It seemed like the Webb-Bailey battery would last a long time in San Francisco, but Susac has potentially completely upended that with his hot bat.
