Could SF Giants still trade Wade or Doval after contract agreements?

The SF Giants could potentially still move on from Wade or Doval although it seems unlikely.

The SF Giants avoided arbitration with all three of their arbitration-eligible players. Two of those players, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Camilo Doval, were rumored as trade candidates earlier in the offseason. Could a trade still happen?

Let's start off with Wade potentially getting traded. As our own Jeff Young noted on social media, Wade's contract is for $5 million next season which was slightly above what he was projected to make.

$5 million for Wade is not a bad deal at all given the fact that he reaches base at an impressive clip. Last season he had a .380 on base percentage, but his power numbers left a bit to be desired from a first baseman as he only hit 8 home runs.

While trading Wade may have made sense earlier in the offseason, now that most of the free agent first basemen are off the board it seems like we are going to see a lot of Wade and Wilmer Flores at first base for the Giants in 2025.

We will see how that turns out given their limitations and durability issues, but the Giants do not have many other options at this point other than signing Pete Alonso which seems unlikely.

With Doval, he too was rumored as a trade candidate but president of baseball operations Buster Posey quieted those rumors by saying that he thinks Doval will be an important part of the 2025 Giants. Yet, his struggles in 2024 make one wonder what his future will be. If he can recapture his old form then the Giants would be wise to keep him. His $4,525,000 contract would seem like a steal if he can return to being an elite reliever.

Yet, if another team desperate for a reliever makes an offer that would be tough for the Giants to refuse then they may pull the trigger. At this time though a trade seems unlikely. Teams usually wait until the trade deadline to make big trades for relievers and closers so perhaps Doval could be dealt then if the Giants are out of it.

In sum, trading either of these players at this point in the offseason seems unlikely. They are under contract for 2025 and both could end up playing a big role on the team. If Wade can stay healthy he has the potential to be a key offensive contributor and if Doval can get back on track we know how nasty he can be at the back end of the bullpen.

A trade for either of them may have made more sense a month or two ago, but now both seem likely to start 2025 as members of the Giants.
