The SF Giants have had a good start to the 2025 season, but they could certainly improve in some areas. Their offense, while strong in some respects, can run cold at times. Could trading for disgruntled Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers be the answer?
Devers has made headlines recently by publicly calling out the Red Sox for forcing him into different roles in a short span of time. Devers was the team's third baseman until Boston signed Alex Bregman in the offseason which forced Devers to become the team's designated hitter.
Now, due to injuries, the Red Sox are asking Devers to play first base for the team and he is not happy about it.
Should SF Giants try to trade for Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers?
Devers recently met with Boston's owner to discuss the situation. While no one in the organization has publicly said they want to move Devers, if the situation becomes untenable they may be forced to deal Devers to another team.
There would certainly be no shortage of suitors for his services. The 28-year-old is having a very solid 2025 at the plate, slashing .280/.398/.490 with seven home runs and 31 runs batted in. He has hit 27 or more home runs in each of the past four seasons so he is a proven power threat.
Devers signed a lucrative ten-year, $313.5 million contract with Boston in 2023. Any team that traded for him would be on the hook for a lot of money, but Boston would still likely demand a lot in return for a player of his caliber.
If the Giants did show interest in Devers, Boston would almost certainly demand that San Francisco's top prospect Bryce Eldridge be part of any package that would send Devers to the Giants. That would be a lot to give up.
Boston would probably also want an immediate replacement at DH or first base which could mean they would want Wilmer Flores in a deal.
Devers is a superior player to Flores, but Wilmer has played great in 2025 as the team's DH and trading him would likely feel like a gut punch to many in the clubhouse who look up to Flores as a selfless and humble leader.
To trade a player like him, or to have a player like Flores somewhat sidelined to make room for a player like Devers who, at least on the surface does not seem like a team-first kind of guy, would send an odd message to the clubhouse.
If the Giants could somehow swing a trade for Devers that involved sending LaMonte Wade Jr. to Boston as well as some prospects not named Eldridge, then that deal would make more sense for the Giants. The only problem is that Boston would not be incentivized to take that deal because they would not be getting enough in return.
That is why a deal between the two sides just does not make a lot of sense. The Giants could certainly use help on offense, but trading for Devers would be too costly and he does not seem like a great fit on the Giants culture-wise. Plus, Devers thinks of himself as a third baseman which is obviously already taken in San Francisco by Matt Chapman so Devers would be in the same position of being either a DH or first baseman, two spots he does not want to be in.
The front office may try to swing a trade at some point to bolster the offense, but a trade for Devers does not make much sense. The Giants would be wise to not even engage with Boston on trade talks for the slugger.
